Technomode Limited Online PreviewA Chapter by Joseph SerranoWhen a mining vessel is stripped from the sky over international waters, an elite team of Mech warriors are sent in for Android destruction.Chapter 1 Fort Blythe-Intergalactic Conservation
Territory July 26, 3118, 2300 HRS Lightning
shreds through the midnight sky, a typhoon rages over Lae Airstrip at Fort
Blythe. A large silver mining vessel, the Main Vein is illuminated by every
strike as thunder booms in the distance. Pelting rain whips through the air in
sheets as the wind makes a howling fuss. The Main Vein’s thrusters fire to life
taking flight, rapidly gaining altitude. The ship rotates around in mid-air
leaving Lae bearing southwest. The pilots confer with the central command tower.
The ship’s control terminal displays the image of a young, red-haired woman
from flight control. “Signal,
Command, we are leaving Lae airspace,” says the ship’s captain. “Copy that,
Main Vein; good luck out there in this tropical storm,” replies the red-haired
woman. “Piece of
cake, sweetheart; Main Vein over and out,” says the ship’s captain, winking. The ship silently
streamlines over the rain forest, silently making its way through the night. The
ship jolts port side and hazard lights flood the interior. The loud scrape of
metal against metal echoes throughout the interior cabin of the ship. “Our signal
is being jammed, Captain!” shouts the co-pilot. Soldiers
scramble to man defense stations inside the Main Vein; helmets go on, and they
lock and load their weapons. Commands are fired away over the radio inside each
soldier’s helmet. Their boots prepare for the pressure breach. A specular highlight
goes around the sole once counterclockwise, initiating the magnetic hold properties.
Soldiers attach special security lines from the back of their combat armor to
the interior cabin wall with a remote feed release. A vortex
rips through the cabins interior as part of the starboard hull is gutted away
from the ship. Critical damage to the ship sends it arching downward in a
deadly descent toward the jungle below. A sonic scream echoes throughout the
cabin’s interior sending everyone without a helmet on reeling to cover his or
her ears. The captain reels in agony, losing flight control of the ship. Rain from
the outside storm rushes in through the open gap in the hull. A team goes
across the interior cabin to inspect the hull breach, all three soldiers,
grounded by their boots and security lines, struggle to the source of the
vacuum. The squad leader fires a flare through the gap into the abyss; its
blinding brilliance fades to darkness.
A robotic tailpiece shoots through the gap wrapping itself around the
squad leader and shattering the soldier’s security line into the wall. The
other two soldiers fire into the darkness. The squad leader’s boots scrape the
ground as the soldier is yanked toward the darkness. The soldier on the right
grabs the shattered security line slipping by and yanks back hard. A second
security line jettisons out the squad leader’s shoulder pack into the ceiling.
A bolt fires from the squad leader’s caster gun, decimating the tailpiece and
sending it writhing to the cabin floor; its exposed circuitry sparks and
dithers as it’s sucked out of the hole into the storm. The other two soldiers
send cover fire through the gap, bolt after bolt. Silence. An explosion
of fire courses through the gap, incinerating the cabin and nullifying the
soldiers. The inferno streaks across the sky. “God help us all,” cries the captain. © 2012 Joseph SerranoAuthor's Note
