Feathered Concerto in a Dusky Wood

Feathered Concerto in a Dusky Wood

A Poem by Phoenix

Whitherward west the sun does set o’er the twilight wood
And harmonies of living things color the leafy domain.
Darkness covers twig and bough ‘neath its heavy hood,
Echoing the whippoorwills lugubrious refrain.

The Chickadee croons a lullaby to Jay nesting below,
The Cardinal in audience cheeps out a curtain call.
Mockingbird dances a little jig for the verdant vaudeville show,
While Nightingale trills an aria in Nature’s concert hall.

The Owl sits as venireman hooting his verdict stern.
The Swallow is the acrobat, the Finch his deputy.
The Robin warbles her young to sleep with motherly concern.
And the Starling stands as maestro of this woodland symphony.

Author's Note

Phoenix
This was a poet-ry challenge piece. The object was to put something together from three random words. There was a defined rhyme scheme of 1&3, 2&4. My words were Lugubrious, Vaudeville, and Venireman.
