A Child's LaughA Story by phjasmineWhat happens when a parents world comes crashing downI hear a
child’s laugh out on the roadside and a small sob escaped my lips, the tears
where tearing down my cheeks. My husband pulled me closer to him whilst we sat
on the couch, he softly squeezed my arm. Through my tear filled eyes I looked
down at my hands folded in my lap where I clutched a charm bracelet. Across
from us on a separate couch sat two police officers; both held their hats in
front of them rested on their laps. They had brought the bracelet to us they
had also brought the news. Opening the front door to find the officers standing
there had sent a chill down my spine, my first thought was jail, what had my
baby girl done to be in jail? But being greeted by their grim faces had told me
otherwise, I had called for my husband before even greeting the police, 10
minutes later they were giving us their condolences, apparently something had
happened at the school where our baby went, some boy had brought a gun and
started to shoot innocent kids. He had hit our baby girl in the process; we
hadn’t expected anything like this, this type of thing just didn’t happen, not
to kids, not to our baby girl. My husband had done all the speaking, asked all
the questions; I just refused to believe that any of this was plausible. A
small sob escaped my lips again as I heard the children playing outside, my
husband kissed my tear stained cheek. © 2010 phjasmineAuthor's Note
