BAND STUDENTS DO WELL AT ALL- DISTRICT AUDITIONS On January 28 The Smoky Mountain High School band traveled to Tuscola High School after school hours to audition for Western North Carolina’s All District Band. All concert band members in Smoky Mountain’s band memorized several major scales, a chromatic scale (which includes all note on the instrument) and practiced a solo in preperation. They were judged based on these three musical skills and their ability to site read a piece of music. The concert band was required to do this as a part of their curriculum, and will also soon travel to festival band competition in March. The students had several months and a great deal of help from band director Andrew Umphlett to prepare themselves for the competion ahead. Six out of thirty-seven members from Smoky Mountain’s band did well enough to make All-District Band. Leslie Shallock (Senior; Flute), William Bowers(Senior; Clarinet), Zach Wright(Junior; Tuba and Baritone), Paul Ulrich(Junior; Trumpet), Morgan Duncan(Junior; Mallets), and Elena Cope(Sophomore; Clarinet) all made the all district cut. Leslie Shallock placed third chair flute, and Zach Wright placed first chair Tuba, qualifying them both to move on to the all-state level of competition. The all-district clinic will be held on February twelfth and a concert will be held on the thirteenth at 5:30on Western's campus at the fine and preforming arts center. On February 8, middle school band students traveled to Tuscola to also audition for all-district at their age level. Four of the students who chose to audition made the cut for second band and one achieved top band. Students that made it into second band are: Nathan Bowers (grade 8, second chair tenor saxaphone), Jackie Balliot (grade 8, fourth chair trumpet), Kate Ulrich (sixth chair trumpet) and AJ Morris (second chair trombone). Trey Grissom's scores placed him in the top band for tuba. These five students are the most middle schoolers we've ever had make the middle school district band. The middle school clinic will be held on the 12th, and the concert will be on the 13th at 4:00 on Western's campus at the fine and preforming arts center.
