A Meaning for Blood

A Meaning for Blood

A Poem by Peter McCullagh
"

This poem explores the meaning of blood, going beyond the literal. I tried to relate it to the family, especially father and daughter, a very personal theme for me right now.

"
History enthusiast,
Bent double over research table,
Searching, greedily,
for murder or spilt blood,
that will stain the lines of family.

Priest, pillar straight,
Blessed wine, aloft,
Proclaims a mystery of faith.
The lifeblood of this sacred lamb,
Shed countless times for men.

Science fixing, dots on slides,
Under a microscope of fact.
Plasma, cells and platelets,
Magnified and analysed,
to profile an identity for blood.

Genealogist, in silence,
Works through, census and record,
On paper and microfiche.
Weaving together,
The twisted and knotted branches
Of his family tree.

This poet when he rhymes can see,
a unifying strength,
a constant force,
Between a Father and his Daughter,
alive and surging through their blood.

Peter McCullagh
I'd be interested in the overall shape of the poem, how I might have improved it. Is the meaning clear, or do I need to be sharper with the vocabulary used.
