Pretend

Pretend

A Story by My Phoenix Project

Something slightly experimental

Let pretend we never met. Let us go back to a time before the kisses and tears, before the fights and scars. Let us lie ignorant of a troubled past. Let us sit upon the ground and tell the sad tales of the deaths of kings and queens.
The night wind rustled the leaves in the trees outside my window as I messaged you. The dim light from a security light in the distance just barely illuminated the floor where I lay. I'd slid off my bed hours ago, its billowing folds and cozy blankets no longer providing me the comfort or warmth I desired. No, as I strained my eyes and glared into a bright computer screen, eager for your next message, my body told me the desires I sought could only be satiated by the heat of your body. Your lips, your smile, the straight black hair that hung close to your cheeks and magnified the intensity of your gaze.
It was Four A.M and I couldn't sleep, desperate was I for your attentions and affections. You had complete sway of my heart and mind, and for you I would do anything. I felt so charged when I talked to you, so alert and in tune with my world and surroundings. I was more confident, sure of things. The sound of the wind was as comforting as it was arousing, eliciting subtle responses from me that heightened my need for your attention.
Your messages came, quick and exotic, telling me of you life, your loves, and ambitions. We spoke of favorite television shows and books, movies and even cartoon characters. The earnest nature of your sharing was all the more entrancing, and In the dim blue glow of a computer screen, tucked away under hoodies and collegiate blankets, I fell deeper in love with you.
Those early days were special.  Early mornings, waking up before anyone else, listening to the soft sound of snow drift into my window while I lay awake waiting for you to tell me about your day. You worked night shifts, you hated them and were always so tired, but you made the time to talk to me.
