Toast the Memories

Toast the Memories

I remember all the flames

the hurtful words that

pointed and blamed

that charred our fragile love

I remember all the strife

Could cut the tension with a knife

would spread the misery on some bread

made it better in your head

to burn sadly those memories

in a toaster oven

given by your favorite cousin

on our wedding day

The night was cold

despite the heat

neither wanted to admit defeat

who is right and who is wrong

the familiar words of a radio song

playing in my car

while I drove away

(I thought I'd left for good)

They played our song

All the sparks that flew

a fireworks display for you

all your pain, I never knew

was floating in the water

a toaster oven, meant for two

was sinking to the bottom
