Wishes In A BottleA Poem by Penulis KecilWe all need a little magic in our lives and for myself and an acquaintance at an art workshop for the mentally ill, last year it came in the form of a necklace of bottled 'fairy dust'.
Wishes in a bottle?
Can I make one? he asked, and I passed it over. He thought; a moment, a pocket of time, trapped. That I may see Linda again. Soon. While wishes in a bottle travelled this straggled line of souls, he asked, have you ever seen one? A fairy, I mean? Suddenly I am 10 years old again, Summer and my room is roasting, windows open but there are screens, and there she is. Once, I say. I don't tell him I stood transfixed, that I watched her without speaking, without moving, without blinking. I don't tell him about the colours of her dress or the glow or the magic. I don't tell him, I thought I saw her smile, I thought she held all the answers I'd been looking for. I don't tell him the feeling that grew inside me, the only time I felt safe in a room built on nightmares. Once, I tell him, I saw one once. And at the other end of the line, I hear a woman; extolling the virtues of these wishes in a bottle- carved fairy, purple glitter, a thousand dreams and a million wishes still left in the bottle. © 2010 Penulis KecilAuthor's Note
