Gray Ghost

Gray Ghost

A Poem by Penslinger
"

A few lines about a visit from somewhat famous ghost

"

I met the ghost of Spaulding Gray

And I could not think of one thing to say

So, we sat and played chess, in silence

'Til he left to catch the ferry

I don't sit and write~things just come to me~as this one did
For those of you who may not know: Spalding Gray was an actor and monologist, among other things.
After suffering serious injuries in a car accident in 2001, he took his own life in 2004, by jumping from the Staten Island Ferry

I like it. I was baffled on the first read as I had never heard of Spalding Gray, but I have never heard of anybody. On reading the story behind the poem I was moved at the notion of the chess game. I like a game myself and chess is always cropping up ... The Seventh Seal, The Tempest, Harry Potter ... And a game of chess seems as good a way to pass the time rather then some awful convo that goes nowhere. I also like the black and white of chess. I like black and white in life, also. I know that much of life is grey, but I enjoy the odd sense of this or that without the maybes. I wonder if a poem should be self-explanatory though, should stand alone without an explanation? But wld not be black or white about it.
