Life

Life

A Poem by Paige

As we are born,

Crying,

Completely oblivious to what’s coming next,

Blind to everything,

Deaf to the hatred of the world,

Innocence overwhelming our bodies and

Radiating from our skin,

Protecting us from the world itself,

We grow older, stronger,

Learning as we go along,

Happiness and depression

Swirled together into one whirlwind of emotion,

Working hard to make a place in society,

Vicious, ruthless society,

Ashes, Ashes,

We all fall down.

Stake a flag in the ground

For everyone to see,

Our life-long goal is to be the city on the hill,

For all to see

In limelight and glory,

We form unbreakable connections,

Positive and negative

With such meaningful people,

People we can lose within seconds

Crushing us,

Left empty, lonely, nothing,

Ashes, Ashes,

We all fall down.

We get shot down

Needing to push ourselves,

To get up off the ground,

Time after time,

Brush off the dirt,

Move on,

We feel small, tiny, insignificant,

1 out of 7 billion people,

How in one life can we make a difference at all?

Shadows burden our souls,

Transparent flames burn us down,

Ashes, Ashes,

We all fall down.

Is everything beautiful?

Is the world just a perception of what we see?

Who are we as people of this Earth?

What is it that we are really supposed to be?

As the book, 13 Reasons Why states,

“You can't stop the future
You can't rewind the past

There is no doubt,

The mixture of pain and joyousness of our pasts is unavoidable,

The impossibility of predicting the future

Is scary,

We travel along this road,

In a blizzard of love, compassion, hatred, pressure,

Ashes, Ashes,

We all fall down.

Life is like a maze,

We either finish

After countless twists and turns,

Or we find a dead end,

No turning back

We are on a conveyer belt,

Constantly in motion,

Inching closer and closer,

Unable to stop the machine from moving us along,

Looking back at the life we have,

As Hamlet said,

“Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,”

Till death inevitably creeps up,

And grabs you from our world,

Switching the lights off,

Forever,

Ashes, Ashes,

We all fall down.

Really like this poem. The search for the meaning of life is universal. I think you nailed it. We have no choice but to make the best of what life throws at us -- the good and the bad. Love the repetition of the line "Ashes, Ashes, We all fall down." Very well done.
