Broken

Something straight from the heart. This goes out to Robert, my first heartbreak.

I wonder, I think,
“What could I have done?”
To keep you, to hold you,
So you wouldn’t run.
Could I have prevented
What we have become?

You say “Let’s be friends”
But I can’t handle that.
There’s no way for you
To see past the mask.
I didn’t know anyone
Could hurt me like that.

My perception of you
Will forever be marred.
With one simple message
That hit me so hard.
I still don’t believe
How you tore me apart.
