Elephants in the SkyA Poem by Alexis Turnera poemNo one has ever seen a sky like this And no one ever will again I don’t know what it is about the clouds They’re always there in our backgrounds They’re not really there Not in any way that matters Not any more than the wind around them When you look at them you realize They’re moving around Like you had forgot From the last time They’re Transient Like waves on a gently rolling ocean They aren’t really there How the hills beneath them sit They seem strong But they can’t disguise impermanence They’re inconstant Every single rock crumbling apart Every single riverbank washing away No It’s all the things around them All the leaves rotting in the shade All the dust floating around All the worms drowning in the dirt They're fleeing to become Little black marks On the cement © 2019 Alexis TurnerAuthor's Note
