O Sisyphus

O Sisyphus

A Poem by Alexis Turner

O Sisyphus, the leopard

Whose treachery set its own demise

Whose duplicity burned himself alive

Who dined in deceit

Who slaughtered his kind

What hubris and greed

Will licentiousness find?

O Sisyphus, the lion

Whose malpractice fed malicious intent

Whose carnivores cut what flesh it met

Who mauled with sport

Who murdered to feed

How grotesque and rank

Will your violence bleed?

O Sisyphus, the wolf

Whose contempt led the lambs to teeth

Whose lassitude heard the innocent weep

Who cast the forlorn

Who failed the abject

What abhorrence and inequity

Will your apathy let?

O Sisyphus, the tortured and pitiable soul

Whose iniquity fated his wayward state

Whose punishment fits now nonextant hate

In endless dolor

Does your sentence boil

For crimes long forgot

Do you still toil

Misplaced is your kingdom

Effaced is your crown

What solace or clemency

Will deliver you now?
