Screams From A Higher Floor

Screams From A Higher Floor

A Poem by Patrick Davies
"

It's all around. I've locked my door, but it doesn't help.

"

Another night,

Another dream,

Another fright,

Another scream.

It bubbles from below

And shoots upward,

To the top.

To the higher floors.

I hear its feet pounding

On the floor above

But my heart goes to it.

Walls with torn paper

It slips through.

Under lamplight,

Through empty picture frame

It makes its home.

I cannot go out again

But I know that walls don't contain it

Or protect me.

Why does it keep me alive?

For I have seen its face.

Screams from a higher floor

Echo through staircases.

Suddenly I feel dead,

Sheets covering my head.

Shivering in my bed

I know it is in the room.

My God, we meet again.

And I'm dragged feet first...

Tell you? About me? But what of the consequences? Oh God, the things they could do to my life if I handed it over... A background from which they could merge into the foreground - a window, an opening.. more..
