Counting Stars

Counting Stars

A Poem by Tory
"

Reflecting on the effect night has on me personally

"
Dense, palpable night.
Wind that whispers soft.
Thoughts that plague my mind
in which I soon get lost.

I then see why many
fear the night as they do,
why they watch their backs when she arrives.
Do you?

She will give you calm and quiet,
and you will think that you will find
Peace. Comfort. Healing.
But instead she will invade your mind.

She will caress your cheek,
kiss your lips gentle and slow,
and then she will take you places
you never wished to go...

Why is it that we live to die?
Will the dead ever return?
When will we taste true peace, true love?
Why does the world burn?

But I push away from her dangerous grasp
before she teases my scars.
I find true peace, not in the quiet dark,
but in the light.

In counting stars.

i love this poem...but i also like the dark...at least i know i am dealing with darkness...it's the ones who lie to us, fool us in daylight that bother me even more...
and lying on my back on a blanket, counting stars is a such a peaceful feeling.
this poem takes me there.

Very true J! Honestly, night to me is so dynamic, it can’t really be defined as something concrete.. read more

It's a well-constructed poem: describes the setting, identifies the conflict, generalizes it so that others may identify with it, and offers a solution, a way out of the conflict. Very neat. The language is captivating, it draws the reader in. It addresses a certain aspect of the human condition: the unknown, which generates fear, frustration and uncertainty. It's also ironic, that without the dark that the speaker fears he/she would not see the stars that comfort/save her.

I like the personification of the night, female form here. Also noting the power of light to 'calm'.
