Always Have Been, Always Will Be

 

I have always been your one best friend.

It has been so long that I can’t even comprehend.

Secrets and lies " all of these we shared,

I even showed you my underwear just to be fair.

 

But things have changed, and love - you’ve had your share,

While I was left alone, still feeling self-conscious at your stare.

Crushes and girlfriends, you told me you had it all planned,

It crushed me, but I cheered you on as if I was a fan.

 

Heartbreaks and heartaches, I was there when you had them,

I picked up the pieces, mended them and treated your heart like gem,

Hoping that one day it would heed my own heart’s call,

But in the end, you weren’t there to catch me when I fall.

 

Oh, I remember one time, you loved with all your heart and soul,

With a girl who was way different from me as a whole.

I was a witness of how your love blossomed like a flower,

But she left you, feeling cold, drenched in rain shower.

 

That night, I was there for you like I always have been,

But you pushed me aside and treated me as if I were a sin.

You told me you didn’t need me because I would never understand,

How it feels to be hurt since I’ve never loved a man.

 

Clenching my fist and gritting my jaw,

I fought real hard not to let you know.

But my heart betrayed me and it screamed so loud,

Way more than I allowed, like it was talking to a crowd.

 

Silence filled the room as you stayed still for a minute,

You looked into my eyes, my heart skipped, oh damn it.

I thought this was it, but my heart fell apart,

When you laughed and thanked me for playing the best friend’s part.

 

I grimaced but laughed with you, not knowing what to do,

Do I tell you what’s true or just leave my heart feeling blue?

But I realized I was dead tired and I wanted all of this to end,

For to you, I will always be, and will only be, your one best friend.

This poem was sad. Period. Many situations occur where we fall in love with our best friends (I mean in general) and they fall in love with the wrong person. They never notice what's in front of them. When it comes to that, we pretty much have to let go to avoid more pain. Other than that, great poem.

These words speak to me. I've felt these emotions at times, when the heart falls for a close friend, that one knows can't be had. It's a tough situation to work through, as one doesn't want to stop being a friend, but at the same time has to hide their true feelings so the other one doesn't get uppity. While there are times and cases that best friends have gotten together and made it work, more times than not, it blows up and leaves both people at odds with the other.

Well done, being a friend is hard, especially when they make new friends beside you and you don't want to let them to spread out to new friends, but you can't tell them. Very well written poem I think it captured the essence of friendship Perfectly!

Love is hard to understand and even harder to hold on to when we are young and too brave. I like the desire of friendship. Friendship will last forever. A wise person is friend first. Lovers second. Love can fade away. Friendship become stronger with time.
