Happy First

"

After the late night.

"

It was three in the morning when she woke me up.

The bathroom door stood wide open and the lights from inside burned my eyes. Her silhouette stood in front of the mirror as my eyes adjusted to the brightness. The sink poured out an constant stream of water. Her hands were pressed up against her face with a towel. “Good morning,” I said, stretching out my arms to my sides.

"Morning." she said,

"Oh, is it not good?"

"It’s to early to say."

"You could say it sarcastically."

"You already did that for me." She putted down the towel and examined her face. "Why do people have eyebrows?"

I sat up. “Why do you ask?”

"Figure it out."

I already had figured it out. “People have eye brows because…there were probably a bunch of cave men that thought eyebrows were attractive and acted upon their thoughts.” II rested against the back of our bed. “I guess they could serve some purpose in protecting our eyes from the son.”

She paused her examination. “Protecting our eyes from the sun?”

"It’s late. I’m not a great biologist at three in the-"

"-won’t need them then."

"Don’t plan on going outside?"

"Not while the sun is out." She resumed rubbing the towel along her face.
It had scattered red and black blotches on it.

"Looks like you didn’t have a good night. Not to early to say that."

"Not to early." She interrupted the sink’s stream with the towel. "Surprised you even bothered to wake up for me."

"I’m curious."

"You don’t sound curious." She rung out the towel and looked at it, as she clenched and unclenched her jaw. Her tongue bulged her cheek out as it checked her teeth.

"How does a curious person sound?"

"They ask some questions." She leaned forward into the sink and spat. There were a couple of clinks that interrupted the sink’s stream.

"I was asking question." She tilted her head upwards and slowly rubbed the towel down her face with both hands. "What happened?"

She dragged the towel down to her jaw before she said, “I killed some guy.”

We exchanged looks in the mirror.

I had nothing to say that needed to be said. The rest came clearly to me. I repositioned myself in the bed and lied on my back. She turned off the sink and bathroom lights and walked into the bedroom. I moved to the side. She filled in the space. We laid in the moonlight for a while before she wrapped an arm around me. I reciprocated. “Happy first,” she grumbled.

"Happy first." I closed my eyes.
