How We End

How We End

A Chapter by Split Voices

We aren’t going to fall apart like an island splitting in half, falling into the ocean, and causing a tsunami. We will end more subtlety than that. I don’t think most people think about this when they are in a relationship. Maybe they are afraid to. Maybe they have an imagine of perfection. Maybe they can’t even conceive of it ending. But I think it’s healthy, if not necessary. I’ve lost people. I know nothing is permanent. So, I anticipate. And hope that I am never right.

We will begin to end before either of us even notices. Some brief argument. Some five minutes of our lives. Something that didn’t take up all that much time in our lives and yet we ruminate on it. The seed has been planted in us. Because that one argument alone was the seed of our ultimate difference. It will take us months. Years, if we are unlucky.  Just to notice the parasitic growth dividing us.

When we end, the parasite will be in full blossom. We’ll clash for weeks. We’ll fight over the smallest things. We won’t see eye-to-eye. And then, one day, we’ll both leave each other. We’ll both realize that we aren’t good enough for each other. And that is the irony that I see for us. That we’ll know what the other needs, that we’ll know what the other wants. And even with all that we know of each other, that isn’t enough.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that when we are so close to each other as we are right now, it will only be the small things that separate us. The small things that we let blossom and seal our fate.
