A Poem by Split Voices

Through closed lips and shuttered eyes, I deal with the world that I devise.

I imagine what I want there to be. I see a world with only you and me.

The cloak of darkness is a friend. A different perspective, not a dead end.

I used to cry for endless nights, instead walking beside the streetlights.

The roads aren’t stark, they swerve and bend.

They are left empty and I am the only one to tend

The grey beasts that pervade the city.

Am I alone? Am I their keeper?

The blood-coated, walking dreamer.

For all I’ve said, for all I’ve done,

I am unsure if you are the one.

Can you walk along side me?

Can you see the world that I see?

Close your eyes and count to ten.

Do not fear, this isn’t the end.

I need to know, I need a sign.

Eight, seven, six, five, four, three, nine.

Do you understand? Can you relate?

Five, four, three, two, one, six, eight.

I am moving on, out of your grasp.

Five, four, three, two, one, six, last.

This is the end, this is the end.

I am different. You can’t comprehend.

I am unique, and yet you are alone.

I am a queen and you are a throne.

You can’t even touch me,

Not even if you willed.

This is for your own safety,

Proximity gets you killed.

But with my eyes closed and my mind shut,

I can see a world where we aren’t in a rut.

We are holding hands, we are closer than ever.

Our minds have melded, we love each other.

So I shall keep walking these streets,

With my blinders tightly on.

Because reality defeats

What my mind still wants.
