The Girl in CharlotteA Chapter by Split VoicesA special encounter for Split Sir
Seats were coupled together with two seats on the left and
right of each row.
I took my aisle seat on the small plane and began to fiddle with the nob holding up the tray table in front of me while I watched people walking down the aisle finding their seats in the twenty, coupled rows in front of me. As the number of people in the aisle waned, I exhaled a breath of relief since my last seat neighbor that day had a baby that liked to do things his own way. But as I got adjusted and buckled my seat belt, a short, blond-haired, fashionable lady came down the aisle towards my end of the plane and looked at the vacant window seat next to me. We exchanged a look and a few murmurs that confirmed her place there and I unbuckled my seat belt and stood up to let her in. She situated herself in the seat that she would spend the next couple of hours in by pulling out a journal and started hastily right in it. After the plane backed out of the gate and started to taxi around the airport, I raised an eyebrow at her writing and asked her, “Fiction or non-fiction?” She laid her pen on her journal and looked up at the ceiling on the plane for a moment before confidently saying “Non-fiction”. And that set the mood for the rest of the flight. © 2013 Split Voices |
