Chain ReactionA Story by Alexis L. Thompson
Kira got reluctantly out of bed and got ready for school. She dressed in a denim skirt and a tee shirt. A ten dollar outfit from Walmart. she went downstairs to see her three siblings fighting over the ring in the cereal box. Nothing out of the ordinary. Kara decided on a piece of toast and a glass of water for her breakfast. Kira's mom walked into the kitchen with an exhausted aura. Dressing her face was a black eye and a bruise the size of a mans hand around her neck. She said nothing to Kira or the others as she filled her mug with half coffee, half Grey Goose vodka. The kids didn't notice but Kira did. She always did.
Kira heard the bus out side and ran out the door for it. When she got on she heard girls giggling and whispering. She swore she felt their glares pierce right through her. She ignored it and walked by slightly embarrassed. When she got to the shool, she went to her locker to find a note taped to it. It said: "You should take a shower once in a while and rags are so out of style." No signature. No hints. But it didn't matter. It hurt. She tried hard to fight back tears as she grabbed her books for class. Turning the corner, she didn't see the boy waving at her as she rushed to class. She was too busy hiding her tear streamed face. In math class she was getting back a test. She was never good at math. Kira held her breath as she got hers back. A forty four. More tears filled her eyes. The rest of the day was like Hell. A girl bullied Kira for her lunch money and punched her in the gut when she gave it up. She screwed up a lab in chemistry and had to start over. Girls laughed at her about her clothes and dirty looking hair. By the time she got home, she found her dad screaming at her mom to get up but she was too drunk to care. Even when he started beating her to death. Kira had enough. Kira was done. She went in to the bathroom to run the water in the tub and cry. the sound of the water was soothing. It was enough to keep her from the razor blade she kept under the sink. Then Kira got really sad and had an idea. She walked to her mom's bathroom and grabbed an amber bottle labeled 'Vicedon'. with a glass of water she took the whole bottle and sat there. Waiting. She began to feel light. Her lungs felt full of water. It was soothing. It hurt to breathe. She finally had to stop breathing. Everything went black and Kira was gone. A few days later, after her funeral, the news announced that a boy from Kira's school had killed himself when he got drunk and drove off of a bridge. There was a note found in the car. It said: "I always loved her. I couldn't tell her. She was my world. My life, and I couldn't tell her. She was worth a million dollars. I couldn't tell her. Now I never will be able to tell her because I'm pretty sure that angel is going to Heaven and I'm going to Hell. Rest in piece, Kira. Rest in piece, me. Life isn't worth it without you here." © 2012 Alexis L. ThompsonReviews
