The Caged BeastA Poem by Nina C PalmerSomeone who hurt us, yet still loves and wants us. And we hold them at arms length with firm boundaries. The days are long and drawn out, They fill with worrisome thoughts of you. Alone in the shadows of your despair, I am concerned of what you may do. You are like a caged beast That rages behind bars of my contempt. I threw away the key so endlessly ago And I stood and watched you as I wept. Your freedom is on the air, If only you could will yourself to taste. But a bitter remembrance holds you down, Unable to seek the demons you once faced. I see you anxiously pouring like spilled milk. Your days are spent pacing left then right. Your howl is as long and drawn out as the day, And all you see is in black and white. I mourn your present quarters, As you are tightly bound and caged. Though I pity you so, dear beast, Nothing has ever changed. You are still the clawed creature That ripped away at my soul. You stood on me as a statue of cement, Until I relinquished all control. And so our battle remains in stalemate, As you burden yourself with grief. I can only look onto through iron bars, And pity your lack of sweet relief. So rest, dear beast, close your mighty eyes, And dream of freedom in the dark of night. For when you wake all with be as yesterday, With the exception, I will be out of sight. © 2014 Nina C Palmer |
