A Stage Play by Paige Who
"

This is a 'show' I am writing and I want to know if it's any good. It's in the point of view of a four year old girl named Avie.

"

(Set in an wooden house, in a kitchen, a mother and daughter The mother cooking, the daughter sitting one the counter, looking out the window wistfully.)

Little girl: When did the blue birds stop singing mommy?

(Mother continues to cook, ignoring her child)

Little girl: Why don’t the other kid laugh anymore?

(Mother still doesn’t answer and focuses on chopping the carrots)

Little girl: Mommy, What made everything so dark and so grey?

(Mother doesn’t reply)

Little girl (in a defeated voice): Why won’t you answer me?

(Mother stays silent, and the girl hops off the counter, trudges away. A tear is seen going down both the mother and daughters cheek)

(Scene changes, mother is walking in the park and the little girl is skipping beside her. Mother sits down on a bench and the little girl runs to go play on the swings, sitting on the swing next to a little boy who is close in her age)

Little boy: I thought you wouldn’t come today.

Little girl: Why wouldn’t I?

Little boy (pouting): You’re late, I thought you’d left me alone.

Little girl (confused): You wouldn’t be alone Silas, there are lots of kids here why not play with them?

Little Boy *Silas: They’re weird, I don’t like playing with them. They never talk to me.

Little girl (turns to Silas): Maybe you’re no fun, I know you can be a real nasty boy sometimes Si, you pulled my hair the last time we played.

Silas: I said I was sorry, I didn’t mean it, honest. (Silas kicks the dirt in remorse)

Little girl( smiles and hugs Silas): It’s okay, you’re my best friend. I can’t stay mad at you

Silas: You’re my only friend, the other kids don’t have fun like we do, they never come to the park except to be sad! Why do people come to the park to be sad? There are lots of fun things to do! (Silas becomes frustrated and jumps off the swings, storming away from the little girl, little girl jumps up and runs after him)

Little girl: Wait for me!

(Both Silas and the little girl end up at the lake, Silas is already sitting in the sand, throwing a small stone in the water. The little girl sits down next to him)

Silas: I don’t get it Avie, why don’t the other kids play anymore! They don’t like to play with anybody, they just sit with their families and cry!

(He throws another stone in anger and it lands far out in the water, Silas pounds his fist into the sand and the little girl *Avie, crooks her head)

Little girl *Avie: Calm down Si, don’t get angry, I don’t like it when you’re angry, you turn into a not nice person.

Silas: Why?

Avie (stares at him for a moment, puzzled by his question): I don’t understand, what’s your question Silas?

Silas: Why do I turn not nice when I’m angry, why don’t I become not nice when I’m happy?

Avie: That’s not how it works (stated matter-of-factly)

Silas (scoffs): That’s a stupid answer Avie, you’re a stupid person

Avie: See what I mean?

Silas (darts his eyes away from Avie, he takes in a deep breath): I’m sorry Avie, I’m sorry I’m being not nice. I have to go Avie, I’m sorry. Promise me you’ll stay.

Avie (laughing): I have to go home Silas, my mom would be sad if I didn’t come home!

Silas (his mood changes into a dark and serious tone): Not that way Avie, but promise me you won’t leave me and that you’ll come back okay?

Avie (still not understanding Silas’s request): Where would I go?

Silas: Promise me okay? Promise you’ll come back soon okay?

Avie (getting slightly annoyed with her friends vagueness): Okay Silas, I promise.

(Silas nods and starts to walk in the opposite direction, Avie gets up and runs to the bench her mother is still sitting her mother's hands folded neatly on a photo book, tears streaking her face)

Avie: What’s wrong mommy?

(Mother quickly gets up and walks away, Avie struggling to keep up with her)

Avie: Mommy?

(Mother doesn’t hear her child’s pleas and starts to run away, Avie running after her, tripping on a rock and landing stomach to the ground in a patch of dry dirt confused as to why her mother is ignoring her)

(Scene fades to outside of Avie’s house, with her mother, Penny, gardening *or seems to be planting pink flowers in a patch of dirt. Avie is sitting on the steps, watching Penny)

Avie: Those are my favorite! (She walks over to her mom and bends down to look at the flowers) You only plant these on special okay-shuns. (Horribly mispronounces Occasions)

(Penny Starts crying and Avie isn’t sure what to do)
