Running Barefoot

Running Barefoot

A Poem by Paige

Sometimes I think we get confused about our goals in life.

Get a degree, get a good job, make a good name for yourself.

Society has structured us in such a way, that we find it wrong to publicly express emotion.

In your life so far; how do you remember your best days?

Were you in a classroom, at a desk, peering outside to the fresh air feeling trapped?

Were you at your job, clocking in, clocking out, seeing the same faces every day?

How do you remember your best days?

I remember being a little kid, running through the yard barefoot, playing with mud.

Before I knew what money was, before I knew what hate was, before I knew that the world would try to break us all.

I used to make mud pies and try to sell them,

Sometimes I still want to make mud pies and try to sell them,

Sell them to the people that bring me down and tell them to eat s**t.

I’m sure mud pies wouldn’t sell quite as good at 19 as they did at 6.

If you don’t go to college, you’re trash.

If you don’t have a job, you’re trash.

If you sleep around, you’re trash,

If you’re a prude, you’re trash.

Drink, trash, smoke, trash, spend loads of money on pointless s**t, trash.

F**k society’s idea of right and wrong, I celebrate trash.

Be who you want to be, do whatever the f**k you want to do.

You’re born, you live a short amount of time, and then you die.

Don’t be controlled by what others tell you to be,

Be you.

I was driving the other day, and I came upon a red light.

Of course, I stopped.

I laughed to myself, in awe of this idea, this idea that a red light controls my life.

If I’m told to stop, I stop. But goddamn, I wanted to go.

Laws, street signs, “people of authority”.

But who gave you the authority to run my life?

Being a free spirit in a world controlled by people that think they know right from wrong is a certain kind of hell.

Breaking free of the puppet strings is a war I may not ever win.

If you remember your best days in a classroom, or at a job, good for you.

But if your best days are under the sun, with people you love, doing what you love,

Or if you don’t have any good days to remember at all,

Then f**k your current goals, change your ambition.

Be happy. Be free.
