To Him, I Am Bitter-Sweet

To Him, I Am Bitter-Sweet

A Poem by K. Carver
"

I lost one of my very best friends.

"

he is gone
evaporated
forgotten
my dear friend
gone
love too much for him
he had to go
get away from me
the pain
i was pain to him
though he loved me so
it was different
I was different
the love i had for him
friendship
was different
and so
he is gone
he will feel no more pain
no sadness
no urge
he is gone

I think it's a unique way of looking at an end of a relationship. The pain is subdued beneath the words, they seem to be lying beneath afraid to admit to too much hurt. There is a tone of resignation, "he is gone" and "love too much for him" hide the depth of that truth...and the end seems to be admitting this truth, even if the speaker won't allow it to hurt to the depth that she actually feels within. A subtle and effective poem.
