Faded Dream

Faded Dream

A Poem by Caitlin Nicole
"

This is a poem I wrote from my english class. It was supposed to be in the point of view of Richard Cory from the poem, "Richard Cory" by Edwin Arlington Robinson and was to answer the question in Paul Laurence Dunbar's "Why Fades a Dream?&

"

A dagger of light,

Sprinted to my envied ring from thousands of miles away,

Just to remind my aching brow of all that will decay,

And emphasize the beauty of what in my eyes is gray,

Oh, what has my dream become?

One hundred eyes,

Study my every move with an envy so naive,

They’d never think their eyes would be so easy to deceive,

They consider me to be all that they can not achieve,

Oh, what has my dream become?

A loaded gun,

Looks upon my riches with such pity and disgust,

To show that what was once my dream is now stained with rust,

Then whispers a bullet in my ear with a violent thrust,

So this is what my dream’s become.

Very poignant writing, taking the individual's suicide and making of it a metaphor for the world, killing itself for a wealth that is so ephemeral. Nice writing. - EllisD
