Go ~ Go Dancer

Go ~ Go Dancer

Ahhhh, the 70's...

GoGo Dancer 🎶

A go·go dancer in the seventies …

free-swaying cage, her stage above the crowd.

In mirrored ball hung high, reflects sad smiles;

but, she fooled everyone by dancing proud.

Adorned to bare such grace as hot-pants do,

embraced in tiny braless see thru top,

girls came and went, but not this special one ...

she was the best, with moves that always pop.

Toned body smoother than a tall beer glass,

her prancing steps timed perfect to the beat,

rose-colored lips sang silently along …

while yells ’n smoke rings filled stale air with heat.

It isn’t that she ever seemed to care

no one that came around there knew her name.

They drank her in ’til they went home to dream ...

for them, this was a lusty dreamlike game.

At 2:am, she left to stroll alone

along the dirty, noisy boulevard …

toward safe haven of her home ’n cat,

who purred his songs ’til comfy sleep fell hard.

Now, time and life have moved out of her way,

replacing every hot-pant’s go·go song

with love of art … piano tunes to play;

 still, in her heart, that old beat plays along....🎵

I've seen my share of them in the 80's when they had showers and poles. haha I imagine that beat is still there inside most of the young ladies that entertained me and others. But age does refine certain arts and makes us appreciate them more.

Well done, lisa. :)

I remember the 70's so well Lisa. It was an exciting time to be young with the music scene and wonderful, colourful fashion. Yes the go go dancer was often featured on our Top of the Pops and was much enjoyed by the young males of the day. Strange how times have changed. I think of my granddaughter Beth and she at 21 would most definitely not approve of such titillation on display for the male of the species, yet back then it was perfectly acceptable. There is such a contrast here between the lively outgoing young woman performing and the reality of her own life back alone with her cat.
This was a real trip back in time, brought me some happy memories, and penned so well I might add.

Does make a huge difference...
I felt that i was transported to the 70s when reading your poem about a unique go-go dancer. Having been born after the 70s passed, I can only imagine what the world and night life could have been like through research, its music, novels and of course ... reading poems like yours!! Thanks for giving a glimpse back in time with this scene of a go - go dancer that i guess... must have been a popular thing at the time. :)

Absolutely!!
I certainly remember the '70s. Much of my favourite music comes from the 60's and 70's. I suppose certain sexist attitudes existed back then, but it was what it was. A good piece of poetic nostalgia!

Yes, that is exactly what came to mind when I was reading a review from Julie..

I remember those days. Your poem transfers the reader back to the 70’s when go go dancers, hip huggers and hot pants were in style and, the dancers did appear that they didn’t have a care in the world. One could say this is so retro! Life moves on but, as in your poem, we remember those days gone by from long ago. Nicely done Lisa! Temp
