Half-Mast

Half-Mast

A Poem by Brook
"

Rest in peace, Jay.

"
3:37 am
i woke in a cold sweat
tangled up in my bed
disoriented
"your cousin hung himself"
and a long silence
and a long hug

"i'm going to the hospital
i won't be back by morning"
and it took him
maybe an hour to leave
but it
felt.
like.
forever.

4:41 am
my thoughts were loud
and i couldn't shut them out
so i went for a drive
and he begged me to be safe
so i swore on my life

5:10 am
i saw people in their cars
and wondered if they were like me
if they couldn't sleep
if they regretted their closed mouths
if they only wanted out

5:27 am
i found a park with a flag
and i lowered it to half-mast
and i wrote a note for the sorry b*****d
who's up there next

"my cousin hung himself last night
God bless America"

This is horrible. The last lines made my hair stand. I don't know what else to say. I'm sorry. I'm sorry the world isn't as pleasant as it seems in Hollywood products. Be safe. R.I.P, Jay.
