"Mom! I'll be fine! It's not
like you guys haven't left me here by myself." I was standing next to the
open door and impatiently waited for my mom to grab her purse and coat. She was
hesitant about leaving me here all alone but I on the other hand couldn't wait
for them to leave. I had plans tonight with Steven and no one, not even my
parents, were going to ruin them for me.
"Alright honey, don't forget to lock the door behind us. The restaurant
number is on the kitchen counter in case you need to call us and we're not
answering our cells. There's left over Chinese in the fridge and make sure you
set up the alarm, I don't want any--"
"Okay, okay, you can go now." My mother sighed and leaned in to kiss
my cheek. We said our goodbyes and then she walked to the car where my dad had
been waiting for her for hours. Moms these days I swear. I locked the closed
door and set up the alarm system then leaned against the door. This is it, it's
time. My heart was beating frantically in my chest as I slowly made my way up the
creaky, old, steps up to my room.
I entered my cream colored room and grabbed my phone that was resting on the
bed side lamp table. I scrolled through my contacts and found the one I was
looking for. This is it, I pressed the number and it took me directly to the
dial tone, each ring added more butterflies in my stomach and each second that
went by kept my heart beating faster than ever.
"Hello?" The feeling in the pit of my stomach intensified and I was
frozen on the spot, unable to even open my mouth to speak. I switched the phone
to my right ear and tried to speak but I couldn't, I was stricken with
nervousness. "Kassie? Is that you?"
Come on Kassie, speak! "H-Hi." There you go, that's a start.
"Hello Kassie. I'm so glad to hear your voice, I've missed you." His
deep, mature voice flowed into my ears and made my mind swirl. The room was
spinning as I tried to control my heavy breathing, I can't believe how much of
an effect his voice has on me. Nonetheless I made myself reply back to him,
"Hi Steven, how are you?"
"I'm doing great now that I'm talking to you." His sweet words melted
my heart and a grin made it's way onto my face as I laid down on my bed.
"You're sweet. I've missed you too, I couldn't wait until the house was
empty just so I could talk to you." I gasped at my sudden courage, unaware
of where that came from but my self-consciousness went away when I heard his
laugh. A laugh that had to have been laced with God's amazing powers, it
created goosebumps on my arms and the strange thing is that I loved it.
"My sweet butterfly." His husky voice caressed my body through the
phone, leaving a warm tingling feeling behind. "Are you ready?"
Reality set in with those words and I was now more aware of what was going on.
I didn't exactly know how ready I was but I did know that I wanted to meet
Steven. Like he said, we were meant for each other and nothing or no one was
going to get in the way.
"Yes, I can't wait to me--
The alarm went off signaling someone's arrival. "Kassie! We're home!"
No! I glanced at the clock that was on my desk and it read 9:30. That didn't
make sense, why would they be back this early?
"Steven I'm sorry, they came back early and--" I wasn't able to
finish my sentence when I heard the beeping on the other side of the line,
letting me know that Steven was no longer there. He hung up. I missed my
chance, it was ruined because of them. I was beyond furious, my hands were
shaking and my jaw was clenched.
They were going to pay, they ruined my chance to meet Steven, the love of my
life, and now I might never get another chance. He hung up because of them and
now he was probably mad at me, he probably thought I lied to him about being
alone. All these thoughts kept popping into my head and I had no clue how to
get rid of them.
"Kassie! Where are you?" I yanked the door open and went down the
steps two at a time. I was a ticking time bomb, ready to explode at any moment
and that moment was about to happen the second they were in sight.
Shane and Wes were in the kitchen raiding the fridge, unsurprisingly, when I
walked in. They were trying to push each other out of the way seeing as there
was no room for them both to search the fridge at the same time.
Wes shoved Shane who crashed into the island behind them. "Move out of the
way, I'm starving!" Shane retaliated by ramming Wes out of the way with
his head. "No, YOU move out of the way! I'm the youngest!"
Wes looked at Shane
incredulously, yep, leave it up to Shane to say something stupid like that.
"What the hell does that have to do with anything? That's not even helping
your case, I'm the oldest so I should get fed first!"
"No I should get fed first!" I could already tell they were going to
go back and forth with the "No I should get fed first" bit and I was in
no mood to tolerate their childish behavior.
"Shut up!" They both turned around to look at me with food crumbs on
their face and liquor stains on their shirts. What fantastic role models they
are.
"Woah Kassie, what's wrong sis?" Wes looked at me with concern but I
was too aggravated to care. "What's wrong? What's wrong?! Gee, I don't
know. Aren't you guys supposed to be at a party?!"
"It sucked donkey balls, it was totes boring!" Wes rolled his eyes at
Shane and muttered a very colorful word under his breath but Shane being well,
Shane, didn't hear him and instead started ransacking through the pantry.
"And you guys couldn't maybe, I don't know, go to another party?! It's
Saturday night, there are loads of fun stuff to do! Coming back home, especially
tonight, is not one of them!" By this point tears of frustration were
streaming down my face against my will, they needed to understand how badly
they ruined this for me.
"Dude chill out, you act like you had plans which you didn't. You decided
to stay home and do homework like the good little nerd that you are. Why are
you getting so pissed off about this? Are you on your period? Dude! You are and
I so called it!" Wes and I stared at Shane in annoyance and I wondered how
I was even related to this monkey.
"I did have plans and you guys ruined it all for me! I never ask for
anything, I'm the good little girl that does everything she's told to do and
you guys couldn't just give me this one night. This one damn night!" The
endless tears just made me even more angrier and my whole body was shaking.
"Kassie, why are you being such a drama queen? This isn't like you, what's
going on?" I looked at Wes with what I hoped looked like malice. I hated
them, they didn't understand. They were just two horn dogs that used girls for
pleasure and drank cheap alcohol for the hell of it, they would never get the
opportunity to understand, much less find the love that I share with Steven.
"What's going on is that you both ruined what may be the only chance I get
to meet the one person I'm destined to be with! Now he's probably mad at me for
not being able to meet him and it's all thanks to you guys. You guys always
manage to mess everything up so thank you!" I didn't give them time to
process my words or try to console me because that's not what I wanted. What I
wanted, no needed, was Steven.
I ran up to my room and grabbed my phone that lay on my bed. Ignoring my
brothers who were calling me, I turned on my phone and found 5 missed calls
from Steven. My heart sped up and I quickly pressed his number to call him
back. The never ending rings left me waiting in anticipation. "C'mon,
c'mon, pick up."
"The person you are trying to reach is currently unavailable, please try
again later." I threw my phone on the bed and sat in the corner of the
room with my knees against my chest. I cried that night, cried for this night,
for my stupid brothers, for Steven. I might never get another chance to meet
him.
