heartbreakA Poem by Elaina Ashlock
here’s what I know about falling in love:
it’ll never last, he’ll leave you, he’ll rip out your heart, he’ll abandon you out on your front porch step at 3 AM wondering where the f**k it went wrong. he’ll climb into the driver's seat of his old pickup truck and he’ll drive away without hesitating to look back. you’ll lie awake at night and stare at the wall, trying to figure out where to go from here, when it’ll get better. he’ll kiss her lips and he’ll tell her all of the things he said to you. he’ll hold her hand while you scream his name, but he’s never going to hear you, he’s never going to come back. you’ll finally accept that. you’ll do okay again, you’ll eat breakfast before work and you’ll remember to feed the goldfish before you leave. but he’ll call you, and he’ll call again and again until you can’t take it and you’ll pick up the phone because you miss his voice, you miss him. he’ll tell you he loves you. he’ll tell you he’s wrong. you’ll believe him. you’ll believe every single goddamn lie that comes out of his mouth you’ll cry and you’ll hold him in your arms. you’ll kiss his lips and you’ll think that it will finally last. and as you drift off to sleep by his side he’ll smile, knowing he won again knowing he’ll wake up in the morning and leave you again. he’ll shatter your heart his pickup truck will still send dust flying down that dirt road and you’ll still be the fool. you’ll still love him too. © 2017 Elaina AshlockReviews
