THE PERFECT TEN

THE PERFECT TEN

A Poem by R J Askew
"

All hail the mythical No.10, a man of such genius he surely cannot exist - but he does and is called La Pulga, the flea, Lionel Messi!

"

My boot is in this lightning place;

I strike, the ball obeys my will.

O how it rocks into the goal!

The sight that spurs a billion souls.

O now they leap in wild delight!

Some even die (it is their right).

But I, I am calm because I know,

That I was born to win this game,

That in this instant of my life,

I am the agent of the gods.

O how they scream and roar my name!

My shirt, I throw into the crowd.

~

I am the perfect ten they'll say

Now that I've won it here today.

Sadly Messi flopped at the world cup - sigh, can't win em all!

next time for sure!
The sight that spurs a billion souls.

O now they leap in wild delight!

Some even die (it is their right).

But I, I am calm because I know,

That I was born to win this game,

It is so nice to read a varied theme in poetry and you did this one justice, for sure. Great job.

It amused me, I like when you write in this wave-like manner, it lives this fizzy your poem.

Hi Gandre, thanks for dropping my. Hope all is well with you.
A fine tribute to a wonderfully gifted footballer but for pure genius try George Best !

This poem makes the reader what to stand up a cheer, for this moment of victory which may never come again. A fast paced action packed poem.
Impressive work!

Of course, these words belong to Mr Linekar, one of the chosen few that always knew he was destined for the final way before the first ball was kicked. Injury free and full of enthusiasm, he took us through penalties to get us to the end of the competition where Mr Hansen will say his farewell. Linekar shed blood, sweat and tears in the hype of presenting the 2014 World Cup. NOTE - most of tears were shed when England left us if anyone remembers that far back. And, Linekar once wore that number 10 shirt with pride before selling his soul to Walkers Crisps. He will be the ultimate winner when he gets his pay packet. Indeed he 'was born to win this game.'

Football! Yes, I love it! I'm a huge football fan! As I am from Greece we support Olympiakos!

Lovely poem! Very vivid images and good word choice.
Between the two you've mentioned I'll go for Messi! Great player! But it is as you said, the perfect ten cannot exist!

There is a passion you have over the pond for the game for sure. For someone that isn't even remotely involved, I do exited when I hear the passion for the game being shared with me. I was on yahoo chat with a friend over there and hearing the yelling and screaming at the tube alone was fun for me let alone seeing it in person. And do they really throw their shirts?? I'm sure that would be quite a hit over here:)

I have a few things to learn about...what you Brits and Londoners call football. The energy in this poem has me nearly convinced that you have been in the players shoes. But..that is the test of a truly talented writer..taking the reader into the lively hood of another..that you yourself can only aspire to with your wit and imagination. You made the crowd stand on there feet...I feel flattered to have caught that white sweaty t-shirt. ;)
