SHOCKED QUARTZ

SHOCKED QUARTZ

A Poem by R J Askew

I am the verse that blocks your urge
To end this pain that is your life
I can't erase the woes you've felt
Yet here I stand, old obdurate
This age of adamantine will
To make you blink, perchance to think
Each life comprises hidden realms
New ways to be, fresh things to see
That pain is not a permanence
Nor one that you must die to lance

I am the line that blocks your urge
To end your life with death to merge
I am the word that brings you back
To love, the verb, your future track

Reading this poem brought feelings of sadness, because it instantly reminded me of an old friend who sadly took his own life, almost 24 years ago. He had been a good friend since childhood, and I had no idea how sad and desperate he had become. None of us seemed to read the signs. He lived alone, and he hanged himself in his stairwell. He was found by his sister (who had a key) when she unlocked his front door, after days of not hearing from him. So sad. I still think of him every single day.

Thank you very much for your review, Robert. I reckon your sense of sadness is shared by a great man.. read more

Thanks Ron. Yes, his memory lives on.

Every now and again, I come across words that leave me near speechless .. actually, they dont leave me at all, they just kind of linger, enticingly .. either begging or daring me to visit them again .. This, has your literary DNA running write through it and is a fine example of the kind of words I am struggling to adequately explain .. Tis damn good though Ron.

‘the line that blocks your urge’ sounds like a voice of reason. I agree with SM Davis, you have not lost your touch..

I’ve read this several times over the past weeks. Each time I’ve clicked away unsure what to say but feeling better in my head every time. You’ve not lost your touch.
