IN THE WELL OF CHILDHOOD

IN THE WELL OF CHILDHOOD

A Poem by R J Askew
"

There's a child within every one of us. And I reckon it does us well to remember how we once were from time to time.

"
We hear ourselves when we were child,
With crystal clarity we hear,
Belle tinkles of our childhood wealth,
Our voice, our laugh, our all-we-are,
As delve we deep into this well,
To find ourselves refresh'ed new.

Sweet child within: know you I well!
For I am your remembrancer,
Big eyes for you! Muchchuckle child.
That smile of yours! It makes me up,
Giddy-up-giddy-up-giddy-kiss.
Carefree you are! the best of me.
I love you so, me gorgeous thing,
My child within, my purest wealth,
Me well of wisdom, love and health.

Giddy-up, constant smiles and laughs, zooming around like the world was only there to be our playground, when parents were doing boring grown up stuff, like talking to other growed ups, cleaning, cooking, working... All the while, our biggest problem was fitting all the adventures we could imagine into such short days... My, how life changes.
No wonder this reminiscence lark caught on so much 😀

Very nice poem. Unlucky for me I didn't have the best childhood.

Glad to see that you are still active here! It has been so long since I have dwelled on this site. Yes, we should all be connected to our inner child. This is such a source of joy and wonderful little gem to read.

Muchchuckle child! I’m a gramma now. It’s bittersweet as my son and daughter in law live with us in my mother in laws home. And the mother in law has dementia, the daughter in law is bipolar. I miss my inner child- and your writing

Had to come and read this beautiful poem again!! Not only is it written gently and finely: metre, mentions and more - but, behind its rhythmic sing-a-song it has nudges galore, reminding us how tis to feel the fun and innocence of true youth.

And we should never, ever, let that childhood entirely go. If there is to be any future, then all of humankind must ever drink deep from the well of childhood.

Utterly love that first line.

Beccy.
