Distorted Visage

Distorted Visage

A Poem by Hannah Erickson

"

Within my walls two beings reside

One to play, and one to hide.

The shadow girl the truth does tell,

But no one ventures to know her well.

The actress lives for costumes and masks.

Her wardrobe changes with the changing cast.

To them her smiling face she owes,

And to their absence she casts her woes.

But the one in shadow depressed seems,

Though confidence makes her soul to gleam.

She sees the world as a god sees man,

Cynicism paints her face wan.

The player's art is that of deception.

"Videri quam esse" is her election

To the house upon her motto's hill.

When a friend's to earn, she'll pass any bill.

So the two girls quarrel whene'er they cross,

And debate the reasons identities are lost

To their masters whom slaves become

When the god of Order, his work is done.

Without union, chaos shall reign

And flood a visage that appears so plain.

Tears of confusion shall fall from her face

Until her soul discovers its resting place.

This is the only place where my writing from high school still exists. A lot of it is embarrassing to adult me, but I'm not going to begrudge teenage me of her thoughts and feelings. I may add som.. more..
