Entertaining ourselves with cheap and made up games as a child

Entertaining ourselves with cheap and made up games as a child

A Poem by Onlyme

I remember as a child,
going out and playing
with my friends
playing games
like "hiding and seek,"
"dodge ball",
using a long skipping rope
where one person
holds the rope at each end
and you all sang a song and
jump in when it was your turning.
Also, "hopscotch", and
"What's the time Mr Wolf"
for a few examples of old games
I played as a child.

Bouncing two small balls against a wall.
To a rhyme. And obviously football too
with a proper football.

Simple games.
That gave so much joy.

Nowadays the kids
have got so many
fancy gadgets
and expensive toys their
parents buy them.

I don't think they appreciate the
value and simplicity of entertaining
yourself with cheap made up entertainment
Or games that do not cost much.

i appreciate this so much...in NY we played lots of hopscotch...lots of cement to paint the game on.
And when I moved to Illinois...oh wow, the dodgeball...midnight ghost...and my favorite "red light green light"
we kept asking to stay out later when it got dark...we never wanted to come in the house...and as you express in your poem....so different now.
the video games...electronic gadgets...it's hard to keep these kids interested...we were amused by the littlest things back then.

Yeah . . . my brother and I are grateful our parents didn't get us many toys . . . it helped to develop our imaginations. Sticks, stones, and useless "official looking" papers that came in the mail made us look like real 'business men.' Thanks for the reminder.
