Mary's Pride

Mary's Pride

A Poem by Onlyme

Her hand trembled slightly
her feet were a little wobbly
as she tried to
stand up from her chair.

Old age comes at a price.
It wears and tears on the
mind, heart and body.

She was only trying to stand up
to have a look out her living room
window.
To see if her meals on wheels were
actually coming.
She wants to see if she could spot
their van.

With the bold print written
on the side of it.
Saying "Meals on Wheels".

As she was getting hungry.

The girl was lovely,
friendly and helpful
and always stayed for a chat
before she had to go again.

Mary was 90 years of age.
Lived alone.
And was so very grateful to that fact.
she was not put into some
care home to rot away quietly.

She loved living in her own home.

Dawn,
Thank you for writing this poem. My mom is 85 and lives in her own apartment in a retiree village. She has a lap dog and loves her independence. I would hate to see her in a care facility. No one wants to be forgotten and treated as a prisoner. Your poem was touching and honest. Well done.
Peace,
Richie b.

My dear Grandmother. Me, sister and mother rotated days. Grandma did not want the old folks home. She is gone now and I appreciate the time I spend with. Our mentors, our teachers, we must repay. They took care of us and we must take care of them. Thank you Dawn for sharing the amazing story in the poetry.

I agree Dawn and you are welcome.
Bravo to Mary and many like her, for their courage and little victories day to day. I too, in my own situation, feel her struggle to be and just do! In the 80s, I was a driver for Meals On Wheels. It was heartbreaking, in some cases, to have to leave them. I then went on to co-ordinated the service, more heartbreaking stories. Thank you for sharing Mary's.
