Bah Humbug!

Bah Humbug!

A Poem by Onlyme

City life!
Always something happening
in and around the place,
people on the streets trying to
sell Christmas items for loved ones,
for  a quick present, you didn't
have to put a lot of effort into.

Fast food stalls, selling hot drinks
to keep out the cold winds from the north.
To hot delicious  pies and complete
xmas dinner inside a giant Yorkshire pudding
wrap.

The after-work shoppers running around. Looking
for that special gift for someone special.  The excited
lover. Looking to purchase that special ring.  To ask
them on Christmas Morning. Will they marry them?

Worn out parents, with young kids, after that must
have the toy,  all the children want.
So waiting in a queue,  hoping they will
be lucky,  to get the last few on sale anywhere.
To make their little soul very content.

The earlier revellers, drunk already or just a little bit merry.
Starting early. Having fun and a good laugh with their mates.
As they go onto the next pub for a few more drinks.
But wishing every passer-by early Merry Xmas wishes to one and all.
Getting mixed reaction from likewise back, to them from "piss off
mate" from a disgruntled guy. Who was in a bad moody
before they made their way towards him with their greetings.
To others saying likewise back Pre Merry Christmas to you!

To hearing Seasonal music from brass bands to a tape recorder
music, someone is playing along to them playing a musical instrument along too it
. To earn a few pennies for charity or for themselves.

The odd homeless person huddled up in a thick blanket they
got cheap from a charity shop. To try to keep out the cold.
And everyone just walking past. Not even noticing,  they were
there. How sad is that? No one cares about the less fortunate
like they used to years ago. It's just everyone out for themselves.
Making sure they are fine and dandy.

The season of goodwill is upon us. And I am just more cynical
than ever as I get older. No one actually cares at all.
About humanity and each other in general. Only maybe the few die
hard human souls. Who always have done throughout the year.
Not just at Christmas.  Bah humbug!

Now is the season to be ...ranting ... and ... according to Wikipedia; When referring to a person, a humbug means a fraud or impostor, implying an element of unjustified publicity and spectacle. In modern usage, the word is most associated with the character Ebenezer Scrooge, created by Charles Dickens in his novella A Christmas Carol. His famous reference to Christmas, "Bah!

So, you are not alone in (poetically) highlighting the hypocrisy surrounding the season by those who do NOT practice goodwill towards others. :-)

The pre Christmas high Street hustle and bustle. Most are jolly, but you still come across the Scrooges of life. This has put me in a festive mood Dawn. There are many charitable people around who really care about their fellow human travellers on this planet. Today I'm gonna think about them. Have a good Sunday Dawn.

Thank you Chris, hugs. Dawn.
To quote my favorite folksinger, Roy Zimmerman, "Our words say we're so sorry, but our actions say 'who cares'.

so very true angel, wise words
It's the most wonderful time of the year and yet it is the most depressing and stressful time of year for many and I remember reading stats several years ago that indicated the holiday season had one of the highest suicide rates. I think that it's a magical time of year for kids and happy people but for many it's a reminder of all they don't or can't have. Ugh, I feel depressed now. Anyway, I always enjoy your slice of life stories. So easily to relate.

We are so tuned to the festivities, we tune out the more jarring, discordant notes around us. It’s the concept of celebrating Christmas that tickles our fancy, not what lies behind Christmas. So the feel is commercial. The faces are vacant and the cheerful greetings ring hollow. Everyone knows it. Few want to reach out and make a difference. Well written Dawn.
