Yorkshire ...Betty & Billy..

Yorkshire ...Betty & Billy..

A Story by Onlyme

Betty is 90 years of age and
Billy 92 years.
Both born in Yorkshire,  England
between them, they have 6 kids born
and among all their kids
they have 12 grandchildren
from 9years to 35

They meet at a woollen mill dance
so many moons ago.

Billy was a little bit drunk as he needed
the beer to give him the courage to ask
Betty to dance and she said yes.

They courted for 2 yrs then got engaged
then married with 6 months. At the local
parish church up the road.

 William arrived 9 months later
then Tina, Rita, Tony, Linda then Robert
last. Over the next 15 years or so.
Their family was complete.

They are a true Yorkshire couple.
Proud of county and identity
of being from Yorkshire
embracing the popular nickname of
"Gods own County" given to Yorkshire
in general

William has the typical flat cap
and smokes the odd cigar at Christmas time
and love a bet on the horses or dogs
every week. Not always winning on
either of course

Betty sees most of her kids
every few weeks in turn. They
come to check
on both Billy and herself.

And holidays Everyone is at their
home with the grandkids in tow.
In front of a proper open fire with
mantelpiece and wood stoking the fire
to keep warm.

Around a massive wood table built
especially for the large family with
Christmas Dinner and all the
trimmings. And the tree with all
the presents around it.

Yorkshire families are the best.

Don't know of cotton mills in Yorkshire - They were all woollen mills where we lived "Heavy Woollen District" it were named
Wore a flat cap & smoked a pipe - now and then

We lived in a street like in Corrie Street - stone house cobbled road
Christmas - when we wed - were together so kids could play wi their toys > Hers Boxing day - mine day after
We moved from Corrie house to an estate -Then wed a country lass and moved out to the sticks - fields across t'road

Thank you Dee for telling their story. I love hearing of people's lives and how circumstances came about. Sounds a beautiful family and depicted so beautifully. I love this!
