she sat at the window......

she sat at the window......

A Poem by Onlyme

She sat at the window every day
This old lady
It turned out this place
was for people who suffer
from dementia

Somedays I passed she would be smiling
and gazing out the window with no care
in the world

Other days she was so lost within herself
It pulled at my heartstrings.

I found out her name was Mary.

She was 90 years of age. Married over 50 of
those years to her one and only sweetheart.
He now dead over 2 years. Her great-grandchildren
and children come to visit her best they can. When
they can. As they live another side of the country in
England and this was the best private nursing home
for dementia suffers.

So every day she sits in her favourite chair and watches
the world go past. Some days she noticed me waving
and another day she does not.

I found out who she was and about her life a little.
From a carer who saw me wave and came to talk to me
outside. And that is how I know Mary in a way.

She touched my heart. Did Mary.

How wonderful it is that you have taken the time to bring a bit of happiness into the life of this woman you hardly know. I know from experience how grateful they are. I do volunteer work for a health care hospice. Though some of the patients I visit aren't able to express themselves verbally their thanks can be seen in the eyes and their smiles. Keep up the good work - Dave

I so loved this Dee. Here in my town in Australia we're friends with a beautiful old man from Shropshire, England. He came out here after his wife passed, as his daughter's here. He's 89 and we love hearing his stories of him and his wife. Thank you for your sketch of Mary and the memories of love for my dear old friend here. Very emotional for time and our old people.
