My Fault

to look into the eyes shedding tears
and listen to the body racking sobs
of those you love the most and know
you are the one that caused it
steals your breath
you would do anything at all
if it means to never cause them harm
the feeling in your chest as it constricts
because they are hurting and
there's nothing you can do
but watch in silence
wishing you could just reach out
and comfort them
but knowing if you do that you will
just cause them to shrink back
away from you
that just causes you
even more pain and heartache
