Mother-in-law

Mother-in-law

A Poem by Onku Ghosh
"

Who ever becomes a mother-in-law, behaves like a mother-in-law.......forgetting her own humiliation in the past.

"
Starry-eyed, as a demure bride,
Resplendent in jewels,
Into his house you came-
Hoping his mother would be yours.

Stripped off your jewels,
Your honour,not spared
To an article you were reduced.
Shattered o smithereens-
Lay all your dreams.

Years have gone by-
A daughter (in-law)awaits acceptance.
Beseeching  a tender word,
A gesture of love.

You curse her,
In unthinkable ways humiliate her.
Hanker after her father's wealth .
Forgetting those yesteryears ?
Or, is it vengeance mother-in-law?????

it actually happens and your observation on the last line is quite interesting. perhaps, those "monsters-in-law" probably feel that the wife of their son is not too good for their son or that she is but a competition for the son's affection. hence, the animosity.

mother-in-law...my daughter-in-law and I get along great.:)

Such a tenuous relationship between a woman and her mother-in-law, and you have expressed that perfectly here. Well penned, Onku.

Brutally honest and poignant, so many have this problem it seems, I was blessed with a sweetheart of a mother-in-law, it was her son that got on my nerves! Sad.....

I was reading this poem, and was taken aback by the power of the lines. Such is the story of many Indian households even today. Were you subjected to such misery yourself? It is true we often forget what we were, while treating others. Wonderful poetry. Really loved it.
