The First Day Of School

The First Day Of School

A Poem by Chase

She bounces lightly with impatience-
swinging her halfling legs through the air
under her chair
as my fingers deftly twist the strands of hair together;
an intricacy.

She bumbles through the door and
down the leaf-littered path toward the bus
with feet barely able to keep pace
in company of the excitement as she hauls her too short legs
up the too tall steps.

This day marks a commitment.
Promise of laughter and learning;
of making friends.

The start of an independent life.

I remember you telling me about this.

It was very vivid in my mind of you with a little girl, doing her hair every morning before school and getting her ready. How sweet. I like your word usages: bumbles, halfling, and deftly. It would be interesting to just do one poem on each of those instances in life: living, children, and family.

Great work Chase. The acceptance of letting go when everything inside you is telling you to hold on is difficult to overcome. Thank you for sharing.
