We Are Human

We Are Human

A Poem by Chase

I love to write poetry
and be with my friends.
I'll take a bath over a shower any day.
It's not uncommon to find me at the gym.
Often times I'm emotional beyond the "accepted" façade.
Football always sounds like fun.
Romance in a movie? No problem.
In a book? Even better.
I want a son.
I sing every day that the sun rises and sets.
Are the lakes thawed? Grab your pole. We're going fishing!
I need a daughter.
My voice, while once tenor, is now bass.
I love; harder and more often than is deemed "appropriate".
Hair is a very prominent feature to my skin.
I'm can be very self conscious at times and
overbearingly confident at others.
I've cried myself to sleep;
more than once.
"Lumberjack" is an apt description of my appearance.

Why do we feel the need to group our hobbies and choices with our gender?
Why does this have such an impact on how we choose to be who we are?
Judgement can only go as far as we let it.
Our twenty-third chromosome does not define who we are.
Society does not define us.
We do.
