Memories from Boarding School days: Land of PlentyA Story by Alao TaiwoA letter to a friend. As usual it rouses a memory from Boarding house to find relevance in our common present realityDear Hammed, I am pleased to write you this piece which is
aimed at arousing a memory from boarding school days and refresh times. How are
you my friend and how is your family. I believe things are fast shaping up to
take their best form. There are so many memories from FGCIK days yet one to
share with you: Land of Plenty (or LOP as we fondly call it back then). You
would recollect how check and white uniforms spread on the line are taken and
worn by another person (most times a senior student) to school area and often times
unreturned. You would also remember that we inscribed names on our shirts to be
able to recover them back when stolen on the line in the land of plenty. The
experience opened our eyes and steadied our hearts to deal with unfriendly
circumstances and thrive in challenging situations. As you know, it was not
uncommon to be disturbed and disoriented whenever a junior student notice his
check or white uniform missing from the line. My friend, I can’t help but add that the
dimension called “Land of Plenty” also extended to guardian’s house where
provision bags kept were often ransacked with milk, golden morn, corn flakes
etc tampered with. I often met my Ghana-must-go bag’s zip worn out when I visit
my guardian’s house on Saturday or Wednesday. Needless to remind you of cases
of stolen buckets of water and fapping
of bucket when left by owner for the briefest of time. Bro, my concern for bringing up such a memory is
both in the name of the experience, i.e. Land of Plenty and its consequence:
unfailing consciousness and sensitivity which I know is a relevant gift to a
Lagosian. Please be further energized by this memory knowing that the land of
plenty can also be a reward for me and you everywhere we go. Love Yours
sincerely Taiwo © 2018 Alao Taiwo |
