Memories from Boarding School Days: InspectionA Story by Alao TaiwoAn informal letter to a friend. I sent it to him on his birthday reminding him of our common experience and how it fits into present reality 19th
October, 2017 Dear Henry, On this birthday of yours, please be
reminded that each new term, each new session, each unfurled season presented
us a gist on the day of resumption in FGCIK and we talked about movies often.
This new season of yours is no exception as I’d like to rouse memories of
Saturdays and the meticulous rigours that prepared us for inspection. Igwe, prior to preparations for one of such
Saturday inspection, I hummed a tune in “Ye
va da raha” translated “This is our
promise” one Friday evening as we rounded up hostel cleaning. The memory
came from the blues; unrehearsed, unexpected, miraculously. An Indian movie
love song like the Saturday wakeup call at quarter past five gushed out from an
atavistic depth, the familiar sound of the house captain’s responsibility: “Last boy”. You know the rest of the
story including how the last three on the queue ended up cleaning the toilet.
This also you know, that on that “line of
duty”, the die is cast. My motivation for writing a birthday
letter such as this is a winning mentality and that you and I keep winning in
multiple endeavours and spheres of livelihood having in mind a soul of Saturday
inspection. I love you. Taiwo Crest
