Downtown Traffic

Downtown Traffic

A Poem by Olmsted A. T.

 Downtown Traffic

Walking in the down town traffic

And my shoes are starting to show their age

My disposition would be more acceptable

if I could figure out why

all  of the times I give too much

it amounts to nothing

yet there's no way

that I'm still not going to try

The chip on my shoulder

is starting to wear me down

but here's to hoping

that it won't be before

I've made my peace with mother nature

because she's a ruthless competitor

swift reckless and jealous as a jester

who covets the prestige he'll never be deemed worthy to receive

But it's been written through the ages

that star crossed lovers will always fall

and translates into many languages

the words we fear the most

Look I've met someone better and now I'm done with you

and the clock will stop

and the world will pause

and you won't recognize logic at all

and all the things you planned

will wash away like a bad dream

I am not a fan of blank verse, but I really like this. You have conveyed the common feeling that enough is never enough and the destruction of one's dreams very well. I particularly liked the last verse with its sense of cataclysmic loss. Well done.
