The Ballad

The Ballad

A Poem by Olmsted A. T.
"

A Bit Of A Ballad

"

The Ballad

Every ballad needs a hero " and this one’s not unlike past fables

It takes place in a small town tavern " and starts in a cold autumn rain

The fire provided ample warmth " as did the whiskey and ale

Somewhere in the distance you could hear a widows wail

Things had been quite rocky since the new law had been passed

It enraged the local peasants and the kingdom was in distress

All it took was a crooked mind to plot the crudely devised scheme

And just a single fly in the ointment " to obliterate the whole damn thing

It’s now time to proceed " the setting has been put well in place

Feel the breeze across the balustrade watch the stars - into fog they fade

Back to the action the heart of the tale " the reason you’re still on edge

Bated breath waiting for the next detail to set into the scrolls of all time

There was a wandering of foresaken eyes

as the lady danced on through the night

the piano provided a wondrous backdrop

and the drinks helped as they often do

the marauder crouched over a pint glass

the soldiers at play at a game of cricket

the barmaid serving up rumors with side orders of drinks

A bounty was proposed and accepted without any haste

It seems that time has outrun us as it often is wont sometimes to do

So at this time I have to end this with these dreaded words

To be continued…
