Safe Harbor

Safe Harbor

A Poem by Veronica Chandler
"

This one is my mothers day present to myself and the dawning of light on miracles experienced.

"

Safe harbor found inside

A womb racked with scars and unfit

Yet still chosen… scars and all

Doctors marveled the miracle of this birth

How could a life been sustained ?

By finding a crevice inside the ruins

A seed finding just enough earth, water, light and air

Sprouting and growing inside the inhospitable

As seeds of trees can find safe harbor in the crack of a rock

Soon after this life ripened to live

The dying womb did give up its ghost

Removed and tossed away deformed

It held out long enough to nurture

Long enough to give safe harbor

I celebrate the scarred and damaged part

For it was sufficient to provide safety and life

One triumphant act of a womb destroyed by evil

To birth the very face of light

A light that lives to dispel darkness

 Chose the inhospitable

And now that light becomes safe harbor in return

Oh wow, I didn't read the explanation at the top before reading the piece and I wondered if that wasn't exactly what you meant. I can't help but picture a seed stuck in an inhospitable crag of rock, finding a way to hash out an existence. I'm glad you were so blessed.

Happy late mother's day.

Sometimes life is just meant to be, and it will take root in/on the most barren and inhospitable of places. We've all seen the trees growing on the side of rocky cliffs. Likewise, human life can do the same.

Because you say "it was most difficult...", I presume that this is autobiographical? That your mother, whether through beating or substance abuse ought not to have been able to bear you to term?
Yes, I daresay that WOULD be a difficult concept to grasp...but at the same time, inspiring, in that the womb that shouldn't have been a safe haven WAS, therefore it's cargo must have been especially valuable!
The line, "How could a life been sustained" needs to be either "have been sustained", or "be sustained".
A most thought-provoking read, Ronni!

How beautiful this was! I can really feel the emotion pouring through this! I feel like i was there on that barren land watching and waiting for life and then to finally see it grow...how amazing! Can't wait to see what you write next!

What is meant to be will happen. Miracles are glorious are they not? Amazing how light can be formed in the darkest of places and then hold you in its warmth forever. Amazing poem
