ExpectationA Poem by Veronica ChandlerThis piece is a prayer for all the friends I have known in abusive relationships with scars that tell the truth. And now this madness visits another, a daughter of my friend who has passed away.
Expectation lingers On about us so, Cloaking everything we know A drape to cover what’s inside To keep the truth from dawning Nudging us along the way our truth does let us know We turn from it and pay the price In one way or another Expecting something missing Something never there The fist still swings and words still cut To spill our hearts all bear Again we come into this place Deciding to surrender Maybes dance and tease and beg… “Come visit us again” As truth peeks through the veil and whispers Oh no not again! Will We Wake To love ourselves and send all lies away Stop the madness cries the truth Love shouldn’t make us bleed Expecting they don’t mean it If we but love enough And then the throbbing stops To cloak the truth again We tell ourselves it’ll be okay Not meaning to draw loves blood Tell ourselves another lie We hide the truth back under As hopes again they soar and rise Expectation beckons us to dance just one more time Truth sinks further down inside And then another smack With words that we deserve this pain Earning it somehow Stop the madness Now Loves not supposed to hurt © 2011 Veronica ChandlerAuthor's Note
