Sounding The River

Sounding The River

A Poem by Veronica Chandler
"

An analogy of my journey.

Sounding The River

Sounding the river of this my life

I test the bottom for depth of character

All along it’s meanderings

My piercing staff penetrates the surface

Measuring along the length and breadth

Uncovering the undulations found beneath the surface

These swirling eddies speak to me

Reminders of the obstacles found along my way

As the constantly changing course etches the river’s edge

It exposes the history of the land it’s traveled throughout

Shining arrowhead exposed on the bank by last season’s torrent

Evocative of my ancestor’s presence here with me now

Light shifts each moment grabbing my attention

Painted with light the water’s surface glimmers brightly

Sounds of the rippling hypnotize my spirit

Whispering sweet every things into the core of my soul

The currents carry me past the landscapes left by my life

Great sweeping curves formed as water danced with the land

Restless rapids propel me towards my destiny

River widening as the sea comes into view

The echoes of my days gone by

Bounce off the cliffs I surrounded my spirit within

The salty water now blending with the sweet

Low tide now pulling me to the ocean from where I sprang

Giant leap faith from my canoe propels me

Now I go back home to where the sea runs through my veins.

Water of my life is deep and the current swift

That led me home to you my sweet confidant, friend and teacher.
